Automatic Form Detection

Automatic Form Detection

Once the Ruler tracking tag has been added to your website footer, Ruler can automatically detect and track most standard forms on your site.

The auto-tracker works by listening for submit events on any element that uses a HTML form tag. Whenever a form is submitted, Ruler records the event as a form completion. Because the submit event occurs before form validation, Ruler may record submissions that do not ultimately complete successfully, such as forms that fail CAPTCHA checks or other validation requirements.

Auto-tracking provides a quick and simple way to monitor form submissions across your website. However, it may not be suitable for every setup.

For example:

  • It can track HTML form elements that you do not intend to monitor
  • It may record duplicate submissions if a user submits the same form multiple times
  • It may cause you to count more form submissions due to failed forms also reporting

If auto-tracking is not compatible with your website, consider switching to using one of Ruler’s manual form-tracking methods instead which gives you more control of what data is sent to Ruler and when
