Setting up your LinkedIn Ads URL tagging for attribution and reporting drill down

LinkedIn Ads UTM Tagging

Ruler supports LinkedIn Ads attribution through standard UTM parameters and LinkedIn dynamic URL parameters.

For the best attribution accuracy and campaign reporting granularity within Ruler, we recommend adding the following parameters to your LinkedIn landing page URLs.

LinkedIn supports dynamic parameters that automatically populate campaign, campaign group, and creative information when someone clicks an advert. These values should remain unchanged in your tracking configuration so LinkedIn can replace them with the correct values at click time.

Supported Parameters

ParameterRecommended Value
utm_sourcelinkedin
utm_mediumcpc
utm_campaign{{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}
campaign_group_id{{CAMPAIGN_GROUP_ID}}
campaign_id{{CAMPAIGN_ID}}
creative_id{{CREATIVE_ID}}

Recommended URL Parameters

Copy the following URL parameters into your LinkedIn Ads tracking configuration:

utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}&campaign_group_id={{CAMPAIGN_GROUP_ID}}&campaign_id={{CAMPAIGN_ID}}&creative_id={{CREATIVE_ID}}

Important

Ensure the dynamic parameters remain unchanged, including the double braces ({{ }}). LinkedIn will automatically replace these values when someone clicks your advert.

Configure URL Parameters in LinkedIn Campaign Manager

To add your tracking parameters:

  1. Open LinkedIn Campaign Manager.
  2. Navigate to your campaign setup.
  3. Select the relevant campaign or ad.
  4. Add the tracking parameters to the URL parameters field.
  5. Save and publish your changes.

LinkedIn will automatically populate the dynamic parameters when users interact with your ads.

Testing Your Tracking

After publishing your changes:

  1. Click a live LinkedIn advert.
  2. Confirm the landing page URL contains the expected parameters.
  3. Verify the dynamic values have populated correctly.

Important

Using unsupported parameter names or modifying the dynamic parameter format may result in incorrect attribution or limit reporting drill-downs within Ruler.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I already have UTM parameters?

If you already have LinkedIn UTM tracking configured, you do not need to replace your existing setup. Simply append Ruler's recommended ID parameters (campaign_group_id, campaign_id, and creative_id) to your existing URL parameters.

This allows Ruler to provide more detailed campaign and creative reporting while preserving your existing tracking structure.

What happens if I don't update my UTM tagging?

Ruler may still identify LinkedIn traffic from existing UTM parameters, but without the recommended dynamic parameters your reporting will be limited.

You may see more "(not set)" values and have reduced visibility into campaign group, campaign, and creative-level performance.
